Hollywood Art & Culture Center Hollywood, FL

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Hollywood Art and Culture Center continues to stand as one of South Florida’s most important cultural landmarks. Since 1992, the institution has inhabited the Kagey Mansion, a 1924 Mediterranean Revival residence that embodies the optimism of Hollywood’s early land boom. Once a private home and later a funeral chapel, the mansion now anchors a campus where the region’s history and contemporary cultural ambitions intersect. The new Arts Education Expansion creates a bold architectural counterpoint that both respects and transforms its context. A sweeping roofline, lifted in a dramatic catenary curve of steel, couples the tiled gables of the original mansion with a contemporary addition that signals the city’s artistic future. Wrapped in a copper-anodized aluminum screen, the façade is animated by light and shadow, shifting throughout the day to create a living marquee for the arts. Facing the city, the addition becomes a vitrine for performance and visual culture—placing creativity on display and declaring the Center’s renewed role as Hollywood’s civic arts hub. Inside, the design orchestrates a layered sequence of spaces that allow multiple functions to unfold simultaneously. A shared reception and lobby open into a new courtyard, enabling exhibitions, performances, and community gatherings to occur in tandem. Studios for dance, digital media, visual arts, and music frame these communal spaces, ensuring that art in process is as visible as art on display. The interplay of openness and enclosure reflects the Center’s mission to connect people to one another through the immediacy of artistic experience. Funded in part by the 2019 General Obligation Bond approved by Hollywood voters, the 5,400-square-foot expansion redefines the campus as a civic destination. More than an addition, it is an architectural landmark that preserves the legacy of the Art and Culture Center while projecting a vision of resilience, renewal, and artistic vitality for the next fifty years of Hollywood’s cultural life.
